In This Guide Show
The fastest way to get a usable Instagram caption from ChatGPT or Gemini is to give it four things: what the post shows, who it is for, the tone you want and a length limit. The six prompts below already have that structure, so you only fill in the brackets. Treat every result as a first draft and edit it into your own voice before posting.
Before you paste: what the AI needs from you
A chatbot cannot see your photo unless you upload it, and it does not know your followers. Most weak captions come from prompts that leave these details out. Keep these four lines ready:
- What the post shows: one plain sentence, for example “a plate of homemade ragi dosa on a steel plate”.
- Who follows you: friends and family, students, local customers, other creators.
- Tone: funny, warm, calm, professional, a mix of English and your own language.
- Goal: comments, saves, visits to your profile link, or simply sharing a memory.
If you are new to prompting, our guide on how to write better AI prompts explains why this kind of context changes the answer so much.
Prompt 1: Everyday photo caption
Write 5 Instagram caption options for this post. Photo: [describe the photo in one sentence] My followers: [who they are] Tone: [funny / warm / calm / professional] Rules: each caption under 25 words, first line must make sense on its own, no hashtags, no emojis unless I ask, do not invent any facts about me.
How to use it: works in the free versions of ChatGPT and Gemini. You can also upload the photo and replace the Photo line with “see the attached photo”, but check that the tool described the picture correctly.
Prompt 2: Reel caption with a hook
I am posting a Reel about [topic]. The video shows [what happens in the video]. Write 3 captions. Each one starts with a short hook line of 8 words or fewer, then 2 short lines that add one useful detail, then one question that invites a comment. Keep the language simple and conversational. No hashtags.
What to change: be exact about what happens in the video. If the caption promises something the Reel does not show, viewers feel misled.
Prompt 3: Product or small business post
Write 3 Instagram captions for a small business post. Product: [name and what it is] Price or offer: [exact price or offer, or write "do not mention price"] Who it is for: [customer type] What makes it different: [one true detail] How to order: [DM / WhatsApp number / link in bio] Rules: under 60 words each, honest tone, no exaggerated claims, no words like "best" or "guaranteed", end with the ordering step.
Common mistake: leaving the price and ordering lines empty. The AI will then make something up. Give real details or tell it clearly not to mention them.
Prompt 4: Caption in your own language mix
Write 4 Instagram captions in [Telugu / Hindi / Tamil / Kannada] mixed naturally with English, written in English letters, the way friends text each other. Post: [describe the post] Tone: [tone] Keep each caption under 20 words. Avoid formal or textbook words.
What to expect: results in mixed language vary a lot between tools and can sound stiff or use words nobody says. Read each line aloud and fix anything that does not sound like you.
Prompt 5: Carousel or tips post
I am posting a carousel with these points: [paste your slide points]. Write one caption that: opens with the problem this solves in one line, summarises the points in 3 short lines, and ends by asking people to save the post if it helped. Maximum 80 words. Do not add any tips that are not in my list.
Prompt 6: Rewrite my own caption
Here is a caption I wrote: [paste your caption] Keep my meaning and my style. Give me 3 improved versions: one shorter, one with a stronger first line, one that ends with a question. Do not change any facts, names or numbers.
This is often the most useful prompt of the six, because the idea and the voice stay yours and the AI only tightens the wording.
How to use these prompts step by step
- Open ChatGPT or the Gemini app and start a new chat.
- Copy one prompt and replace every bracket with your real details.
- Read all the options. Pick one, or ask a follow-up such as “make option 2 shorter and less formal”.
- Edit it yourself: add a name, a place or a small detail only you would know.
- Paste it into Instagram, then add your own hashtags and location.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Posting the first draft unchanged. AI captions tend to use the same safe phrases, so unedited ones read alike.
- Letting the AI invent details. Check prices, dates, places and names every time. For why this happens, see why ChatGPT sometimes sounds confident but gets things wrong.
- Asking for hashtags blindly. A chatbot cannot see which hashtags are active today. Instagram has also changed its hashtag limits over time, so check what the app currently allows.
- Burying the point. Instagram shows only the opening of a caption before the “more” link, so the first line has to carry the message.
- Sharing private information. Do not paste customer names, phone numbers or private chats into an AI tool.
When to write the caption yourself
For personal news, condolences, apologies or anything emotional, write it yourself. A caption that sounds generated can feel cold in those moments. Use AI at most to check spelling.
FAQ
Are these Instagram caption prompts free to use?
Yes. They are plain text prompts that work in the free versions of ChatGPT and Gemini. Free accounts have usage limits that change from time to time.
Can I upload my photo instead of describing it?
Yes, both tools accept image uploads. Check that the description is right, and avoid uploading photos of other people without their consent.
Will AI captions get more likes?
Nobody can promise that. A clear first line and an honest caption help people understand the post, but reach depends on many things outside the caption.
Should the AI write my hashtags too?
It can suggest ideas, but it cannot see current trends. Search each hashtag inside Instagram before you use it.
Can it write captions in Telugu or Hindi?
Yes, including a mix with English. Quality varies, so read the result aloud and correct anything that sounds unnatural.
